Members of the public, on Wednesday, filed a case against Maldivian Democracy Network (MDN) to the Civil Court.
So far, no information regarding the court’s acceptance of the case was released.
According to the Ministry of Islamic Affairs, MDN's 'Preliminary Assesment of Radicalisation in Maldives' contained written accounts which contradicted the tenents of Islam and threatened the religious unity of Maldives.
Public criticism of the NGO is widespread with several demanding an outright ban of MDN, claiming that a suspension was an insufficient measure.
Ministry of Youth, Sports and Community Engagement have banned the human rights NGO while the organization remains under investigation.
Police have begun issuing summons to individuals who made death threats against MDN founder Shahindha Ismail, during a protest in Angolhitheemu, Raa Atoll, on October 18. However, he did not confirm the number of individuals being summoned for questioning or their identities.
As part of the larger investigation regarding MDN, police are working to compile an educational research report on the matter. Police assured that it would inform relevant institutions to take appropriate administrative measures against MDN after their report is completed.
