Parliament Elections 2024: PNC wins supermajority with 70 seats

Ruling Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM)/ People's National Congress (PNC) coalition has won a super majority in today's parliamentary elections.

Ruling Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM)/ People's National Congress (PNC) coalition has won a super majority in today's parliamentary elections.

As per the interim results, PNC has won 70 seats in today's election.

With 70 seats [three fourths of the entire parliament of 93 seats], PNC will hold the super majority in the 20th People's Majlis with the power to amend the constitution.

Coalition partners of PNC, Maldives National Party (MNP) and Maldives Development Alliance (MDA) also won seats in today's election, with MNP winning one seat and MDA winning two.

There is a stark difference is seat composition this election in comparison with the previous election.

PNC has won a high number of seats in Male', Addu, Fuvahmulah and Kulhudhuhfushi.

Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP), which won 65 seats in the previous elections, won only 15 seats today.

The Democrats, as well as Adhaalath Party, failed to win any seats at all.
