Meemu atoll, Muli airport is set to be expanded in order to accommodate jets.

CEO of Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC) Adam Azim said that a runway of 1,200 meters was initially agreed upon to develop the airport. However, it has been decided to increase the size of the runway to 1,500 meters on the state request.

He said that this would bring about changes in the price. However, Azim said he was not sure how much more would be spent to complete the project.

"Mihaaru news" has come to know that Muli airport will be expanded to facilitate private jets. The additional 300 meters to the airport project will increase the project cost by MVR 70 million from the initial MVR 222 million. This means that the total project cost of the Muli airport will increase to MVR 300 million.

While 30 percent of Muli airport has been completed, MTCC aims to finish the project by July next year. The fire building, passenger terminal and runway of the airport are currently under construction.

In addition to Muli Airport, Alifushi Airport in Raa atoll is also under construction. Reclamation of the airport area is currently underway.
