Anti Corruption Commission (ACC), on Tuesday, forwarded a case to the Prosecutor General’s (PG) Office, seeking to press corruption charges against four members on the board of Maldives Road Development Corporation (MRDC), prior to its dissolution.
According to ACC, investigations into Ibrahim Nazeem, Mohamed Riyaz, Ahmed Rasheed and Mohamed Ali Didi “proved beyond the shadow of a doubt” that the four members had used their position of power to gain undue advantages for a specific party in procuring a landing craft for the company.
The corruption watchdog alleged that the board members amended the procurement agreement with the intention of gaining undue advantages for the contractor.
MRDC’s amended contract required an advance payment of half the total cost of the landing craft, billed at MVR 7.9 million, to be paid to Tropic Investment Pvt Ltd.
Therefore, ACC requested PG Office to charge all four members with exerting influence to earn illicit gains for another party.
ACC revealed that the issue was initially filed at the commission on October 2018. However, ACC’s members at the time had investigated the issue and concluded that there was no proof to back up the allegations.
The commission stated that it reopened the investigation in February this year, upon a request submitted by the original investigative team.
