Ungoofaaru MP Mohamed Waheed, on Tuesday, submitted an emergency motion calling to expedite the investigation of multiple accounts of felonies committed during the administration of former President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom.

The motion was accepted by the parliament and debates have commenced.

According to MP Waheed, one of the biggest presidential pledges of the current administration is to investigate the crimes allegedly committed by Yameen's government, adding that billions in damages were incurred by the economy.

"Hundreds of people have been arrested within five years of the previous administration. Unjustly tortured", said the lawmaker, claiming that some individuals even succumbed to their injuries.

Moreover, he said that while every political leader was jailed during the time frame, many had also lost their jobs.

Additionally, he noted a record amount of "stolen" funds from the treasury.

The parliamentarian expressed extreme public concern in relation to the investigations and hearings yet to take place.
