Maldives Ports Limited (MPL) has deducted the rates of export container fees.

According to a media official from the company, the board made the decision to lower container rates in order to encourage local exporters and increase exports. The decision is also aimed at promoting export sector businesses and trade activities.

“We will continue to collaborate closely with industry leaders to support economic growth and trade in our primary sectors,” MPL said in a statement.

MPL reported that with the new reductions, the export fee for a 20-foot container has dropped to MVR 1,132 from the previous MVR 4,419. The export fee for a 40-foot container has been reduced to MVR 2,2464 from the previous MVR 8,767.

With the price reduction on export container fees, local exporters can save up to 75 percent of their export costs.

Maldives primarily exports fish and fish-related commodities to global destinations. MPL Chief Executive Shahid Ali met with local fish exporters to update them on the new revisions. Shahid discussed with local fish exporters to understand the challenges they face.
