Maldives' Ammadey and Smiley advance to fourth round

National surfing team captain Ahmed Agil (Ammadey) has advanced to the fourth round of the Asian Surfing Championship.

In the ongoing championship hosted at Kaafu atoll Thulusdhoo, Agil secured second place in his third-round heat.

Competing against the Philippines' number one surfer, John Mark Tokong, Agil earned a score of 11.50. John Mark, a seasoned surfer, won the heat with a score of 18.34. Kawasakire Malavir placed third with a score of 9.60, while China's Zayun Zahang came in fourth with 5.20 points.

Ismail Rasheed (Smiley), a member of Maldives Team B, also advanced to the fourth round, finishing second in his heat.

Thailand's Nathakron Saeli won the third heat with a score of 10.87 after surfing six waves.

Smiley scored 8.07 points from five waves. Bangladesh's Mohamed Mannan finished third with a score of 6.97, while Thailand's Tin Johnson came in fourth.

In the afternoon heats of the third round, the Maldives' Ahmed Hisham Shaheem and Hassan Nasih had to withdraw from the tournament. Other Maldivian athletes are set to compete in the remaining afternoon events.

This year's Asian Championship serves as a qualifier for the 2026 Asian Games in Japan.
