President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih on Tuesday decided to seek parliamentary consideration for Maldives to join the "International Union for Conservation of Nature" (IUCN).

As per the President's Office, the decision was made after deliberations by the Cabinet on a paper, proposed by the Ministry of Environment on the topic during today’s session.

Joining the organization will present Maldives with various partnership and networking opportunities in relevant areas.

Additionally, the ICUN will provide assistance to enhance efforts towards conserving nature.

Maldives will also get the opportunity to develop technical capacity towards conservation and sustainability in nature, an area that needs much development in the country.

IUCN is a membership Union and it is the largest international conservation body comprised of representatives from government and civil society organisations (CSO's).

The democratic union harnesses the experience, resources and reach of more than 1,400 member organisations and the input of over 17,000 experts from 170 countries across the globe.

The organization's diversity and vast experience in the field make it the global authority on the status of the natural world and the measures needed to safeguard it.
