Parliament chair has alleged that the extraordinary motion to table debate on the Palestine-Israel conflict, was deliberately interrupted.

Earlier, a resolution was submitted to the parliament calling for the government to take all necessary actions against Israel in the wake of its attacks on the Palestinian people.

The resolution sought to cut all forms of relationships with Israel, including a travel ban on Israeli arrivals to the Maldives and a cessation on Israeli exports.

After the first reading of the resolution submitted to the parliament by Vilingili MP Saud Hussain, Deputy Speaker and North-Galolhu MP who presided as chair during Monday's sitting said an extraordinary resolution on the matter was presented to the parliament secretariat.

Eva, while explaining the decision to reject the extraordinary motion, said that the parliament regulations dictated prioritizing the resolution over the extraordinary motion.

Shortly after this, the parliament chair next allowed debate on the industrial relations bill, which was interrupted by Kaashidhoo MP Abdulla Jabir who said the most concerning matter right now was related to the war in Palestine, and said it was saddening that the debate on the matter was obstructed.

He also argued that using a by-the-book approach as an excuse to reject such an important matter was undesirable.

Eva responded that equal chances were given to both the members who submitted the resolution seeking the extraordinary motion, as well as the resolution.

She added that the MP who submitted the resolution requested to postpone the issue during Monday's sitting.

Debates on extraordinary motions must be concluded on the same date of the motion's submission, whereas resolutions require debate after which it is forwarded to the relevant parliamentary committee.

MP Saud submitted the resolution as a formal recognition of Maldives government's condemnation of the attacks on Gaza and the Palestinian people by the Israeli government.

The resolution said that the Israeli government was continuing with their inhumane attacks on women, children and innocent Palestinian civilians, and deemed it as an act of terrorism.

The resolution further urged all necessary action by the Maldives government to condemn Israel's attacks, including a travel ban on its citizens to the Maldives as well as a ban on Israeli imports.

"It is imperative for Maldives to end or suspend all forms of relationship with Israel immediately and to maintain this decision until the Israeli government relinquishes control of the lands it has forcefully occupied from Palestine," the resolution read.

Additionally, MP Saud's resolution also said that it was important to reveal the Maldives parliament's consensus about Israel's injustice to the international community besides condemning their attacks and ensuring human rights for the people of Palestine.
