Former Attorney General Husnu Al Suood delivered a statement Monday, asserting his belief that in the upcoming Presidential Elections, Maldivians must embrace the opportunity to defect from the current leadership of President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom, lest the country fall into a state of irreversible disarray.

The address was delivered at the inauguration ceremony of Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP)’s honorary Addu activity center located on Male City’s Roashanee Magu (Henveiru), following the commencement of the party’s ‘Jazeeraa Raees’ (Island President) campaign.

Speaking as chief guest, he said MDP was just beginning to face the challenge of winning the election over the ruling administration.

Suood, who served as the first Attorney General of 2008’s MDP-led coalition government until his resignation in protest of opposition MP’s ‘ungovernable’ diplomacies, declared that the reasons for winning the election over President Yameen were numerous.

“I believe this win to be a necessity because of the prevailing absence of equality and justice. Many have suffered. Our country is being plundered. The plague of corruption endures.”

“We must halt the government’s efforts to further corruption”, said (Addu Atoll) Meedhoo-born Suood, proclaiming every step taken by Yameen’s government to be seeped in corruption and malfeasance.

“It is a duty that befalls all Maldivians. (Due to corruption) The progress of our country faces many obstacles. Hence, it is because justice has been lost, suffering has spread, and that corruption continues that we must work to change the administration.”

“If the current government continues to stay in power, and this suffering continues for another five years (under this government), then I do not believe we will be able to restore our losses.”

According to Suood, the incumbent party has already initiated plans to ‘swindle the nation’s riches’ and sell land to foreign investors and corporations.

“I hold to the belief that when all economic resources are being handed over to foreign parties, it is imperative that the government must change.”

“All of our economic resources are being handed over to foreign parties. For these reasons I am one (of many) that believes our leadership must change”, Suood affirmed.

Member of Parliament for Addu-Meedhoo constituency Rozaina Adam, who also attended the function, expressed her thanks to the party for establishing an ‘Addu’ hub in Male’ city, emphasizing that the initiative would serve to strengthen Addu campaign efforts.

MP Rozaina expressed her confidence that the Addu constituency remains in favor of MDP and will sweep a landslide victory party as it has during previous years, in the upcoming Presidential Elections.
