The Local Government Ministry is working to demolish the Gaamagu Café building after it was destroyed in a fire yesterday.

In a post on X (formerly Twitter) Local Government Minister Adam Shareef said that the building is being demolished to ensure public safety, and that the demolishing process is expected to be completed within the next three to four days.
The Henveiru Dhoohimirige building, which is where the Gaamagu Café was located in, had three floors. The top two floors were made with deck ceilings and tin roofing sheets around. At the time, it was being used as an accommodation block for expatriates.
The building was burnt beyond use during the fire which broke out at around 03:00 pm in the afternoon. Maldives National Defence Force (MNDF)'s Fire and Rescue Services worked for about one hour before the fire was brought under control.
A total of 57 individuals were left stranded following the incident.
The minister had previously also demolished Maafannu Rabeeuvilla, a building in Malé which was being used as a drug den.
