Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM) and People’s National Congress (PNC) coalition candidate Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has pledged to develop the National Mental Health Hospital in Laamu atoll Gan besides the tertiary hospital.

Dr. Muizzu made the remarks at the campaign rally held in Laamu atoll Gan. The Malé City Mayor along with his campaign team is currently touring Laamu atoll for his presidential campaign.

The opposition coalition’s candidate said that the ideal location for such an establishment was Gan.

“Even in foreign countries, mental health hospitals are developed in serene locations with lush vegetation, low traffic, and congestion. In places where the patients can get peace of mind,” Dr. Muizzu said.

Muizzu first made the pledge of the national mental health hospital during his campaign visit to Shaviyani atoll Funadhoo. Speaking about the hospital, Dr. Muizzu highlighted the growing number of mental health ailments and cases in the Maldives, which he said should be treated without leaving the country.

The PPM/PNC coalition candidate pledged to transform Gan Regional Hospital into a tertiary institution and expand its services.

Pledges for Gan

Dr. Muizzu, addressed the housing challenges faced by the residents of Gan and pledged to work closely with the local council to address these issues. He emphasized a decentralized approach to housing initiatives to meet the community's needs.

He also pledged to provide housing for people migrating to Gan for various reasons and said the people who migrated to the island from Mundoo and Kalhaidhoo required more than affordable shelter. He further promised to provide compensation for the palms and trees under the proprietorship of Mundoo and Kalhaidhoo locals.

Besides this, Dr. Muizzu promised affordable housing loan facilities for proprietors to develop their plots in Gan and Fonadhoo. He also pledged the loans will be low interest based with no required down payments.

Dr. Muizzu pledged to redevelop the roads, establish sports facilities for youth, and create an Agriculture Ministry to utilize Gan's extensive land area.

Dr. Muizzu noted that these promised initiatives would contribute to internal migration within the Maldives.

At the campaign rally, several Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) supporters, most of them youths, signed to PPM and showed their support to the opposition coalition’s candidate. Among the high-profile switches included Gan island council’s Deputy President Abdulla Asif who was elected through MDP’s ticket.
