Parliament, on Wednesday, passed to reassign current post holder of ambassador to Sri Lanka, Mohamed Hussain Shareef, to non-resident ambassador to Russia.

During the parliament sitting held on Wednesday, the request to reassign Shareef was passed unanimously by all 36 lawmakers present at the session.

Lawmakers of the opposition have been boycotting parliamentary sittings after they resumed for the second session. Thus, all 36 lawmakers were of ruling coalition, Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM) and Maldives Development Alliance (MDA).

The parliament's Committee on National Security stated that Shareef was well qualified for the job due to his previous experiences in this line of work. Therefore, the committee had passed the reassign request without an interview process.

Shareef had earlier served as the ambassador to Japan, Minister of Youth and Sports, and Minister of the President’s Office during the current administration.
