Former Minister of Economic Development and Vice President of People’s National Congress (PNC) Mohamed Saeed retained his electoral win of Maavah constituency following the vote recount.

The Elections Commission (EC)'s recount revealed that Saeed won the constituency, which consists of Hithadhoo and Kunahandhoo in addition to Maavah in Laamu Atoll, by a margin of five votes.

According to previous results, Saeed gained the lead over Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP)'s candidate Ibrahim Falah by six votes.

The recount showed that Falah received one extra vote, making it a total of 848 votes in his favour. Saeed, a native of Thuraakunu, Haa Alif Atoll, received 853 votes from the 2,789 eligible voters. Current Maavah MP Azhan Fahmy also had one additional vote, receiving a final count of 651 votes.

Falah had claimed that the PNC Vice President won due to false votes counted in his favour, prompting EC to recount the ballots.

The former minister played a leading role in development projects conducted during former President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom’s administration. His win resulted in the opposition alliance of Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM) and PNC winning a total of seven parliamentary seats.

The 2019 parliamentary elections ended with MDP winning the majority, having attained 65 seats.
