Alifushi constituency MP Mohamed Rasheed Hussain (Bigey) has been elected on Wednesday night as the parliamentary group (PG) leader of parliamentary majority party Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP).
The PG leader's position became vacant due to the resignation of Hithadhoo North constituency MP Mohamed Aslam, following his election as Parliament Speaker.
Besides Bigey, Kaashidhoo MP Abdulla Jabir and Kurendhoo MP Abdul Ghani Abdul Hakeem also contested for the position.
As per the temporary results of the election, Bigey won with 28 votes. Jabir came closest with 20 votes, while Ghani received 2 votes.
As there is currently a motion submitted for the dismissal of Deputy Speaker Eva Abdulla, it is believed that an MP from MDP will be contesting for that position as well.
