Maldives National Party (MNP) has announced entering into an agreement with Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM) and People's National Congress (PNC) to contend in the upcoming parliamentary election through a unified coalition.

MNP leader Mohamed Nazim shared the news during the party's council meeting, after some MNP members raised concerns about the party's coalition arrangement with PPM/PNC.

According to Nazim, a special provision under the agreement with president-elect Dr. Mohamed Muizzu provides details about the coalition's conduct in the election.

The provision stipulates that all three parties will contend in the elections together for the next five years, Nazim said.

"The coalition will hold a primary within its partners, and will field the winning candidate," Nazim said, speaking about MNP's agreement with PPM/PNC made in September 12.

According to the Elections Commission (EC) the next election will be on January 2024 to elect Malé City mayor.

Parliamentary elections is scheduled for either March or April, said EC.

Nazim said that the agreement stated MNP will be contending together with PPM and PNC in said elections as well.
