Additional streetlights have been installed in Haa Dhaalu atoll Hanimaadhoo.
According to Hanimaadhoo Island Council President Abdul Sattar Hassan, 268 lights were installed last year at a cost of MVR 3.5 million, and this year, MVR 150 million was allocated to install an additional 418 streetlights.
Sattar said that the initial phase was costly due to the involvement of two companies for material procurement and installation. However, this time, the council awarded the contract to Minute Construction, a company that had previously installed streetlights on the island.
Minute Construction sourced the necessary lights and cables and completed the final segment of the installation last Tuesday.
The council's decision to fund the project arose from public concern over the lack of adequate lighting, particularly within the island and harbour areas.
The new lights are installed in residential zones and key areas, such as beaches. Unlike previous installations, which had large gaps between lights, the new lights are placed 80-85 feet apart.
Sattar also said that streetlights will be installed near the newly allocated housing plots next year.
