Jumhooree Party's (JP) founder Qasim Ibrahim arrives in Maldives on Thursday.
Upon arrival at Velana International Airport (VIA), he was welcomed by President-Elect Ibrahim Mohamed Solih, Vice President-Elect Faisal Naseem and various leading members and supporters from JP, Adhaalth Party (AP), Maumoon Reform Movement (MRM) and Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP).
Along with Qasim, JP's Chairperson Ali Waheed and JP member Dr.Shaah Maahir also arrived in Maldives. Qasim was also accompanied by two of his sons.
After Qasim was sentenced to three years on bribery charges, he left for medical treatment to Singapore in Septemeber 6, 2017. Afterwards, he was living in self-exile in Germany.
Qasim has returned to the Maldives after the High Court recently released him on bail. When questioned about his release, Qasim stated that the release of "unlawfully" detained individuals is an indication that the judiciary is now free from influence and functioning independently.
Adding that he requires regular medical treatments, Qasim revealed that his doctors have advised that he should not be detained in prison due to his poor health.
Ali Waheedh had sought asylum in the United Kingdom in 2015, following his time in jail after the ‘May Day’ rally held on labour day that year.
