Maldives Media Council (MMC) has ordered blocking the website "Dhenme" due to its publication of content that violates social norms and standards.

The Media Council has undertaken an investigation into the website, which has been found to publish content that breaches the country’s general social norms and includes obscene and derogatory material towards women.

The council’s complaints committee issued a report following the investigation, which revealed that the website was not registered in the Maldives.

An earlier investigation in 2023 also highlighted similar issues with the website, prompting an announcement seeking information about it. Although content was briefly halted, it resumed shortly thereafter.

According to the report, the website publishes at least one article daily that violates general social standards.

The commission also found that the website uses obscene language in news articles, undermining individuals dignity. The articles have widely circulated among the public and has garnered high social media interaction.

MMC has decided to notify the relevant authorities to shut down the website due to repeated and blatant violations of the Maldives Media Code of Conduct.
