The Parliament’s Committee on National Security, on Sunday, approved two ambassador nominations by President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih, after reversing their earlier decision to reject the nominations.

In a meeting held December 13, 2018, the parliament's special committee rejected the posting of Mohamed Jinah as Ambassador to Thailand and Mohamed Haleel as Ambassador to Saudi Arabia. However, Ambassador to China Aishath Azeema received the committee's approval.

The previously rejected nominations for Jinah and Haleel were approved in a meeting held on February 24, by a majority vote of the six members present in the meeting.

Some members of the National Security Committee that rejected the nominations in the previous meeting, voted in favour of the nominations on Sunday.

Despite the committee’s approval, a vote will also be taken in a parliament session. The approval for the ambassadors will only be passed by the majority vote of the parliament members taking part in the session.

While the parliament has passed approvals for a total of eight ambassadors in the past, the National Security Council has also approved them.

The eight ambassadors are:

Permanent representative of Maldives at the UN and Ambassador for America, Thilmeeza Hussain

Ambassador for Brussels, Hassan Sobir

Ambassador for India, Aishath Mohamed Didi

Ambassador for Sri Lanka, Umar Abdul Razzaq

Ambassador for Singapore, Dr Abdulla Mausoom

Ambassador for Germany, Ahmed Latheef

Ambassador for United Kingdom, Dr Farahnaz Faisal

Ambassador for Malaysia, Visam Ali
