The United States intend to aid President-Elect Ibrahim Mohamed Solih’s administration in the effort to recover the state funds embezzled through the Maldives Marketing and Public Relations Corporation (MMPRC), declared prominent American newspaper 'The Los Angeles Times'.

According to The Los Angeles Times, Solih contemplated involving the US' Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) and other state authorities in the investigation of the MMPRC corruption scandal, during an interview. The MMPRC scandal, which implicates several top government figures, is the most colossal case of corruption on record in the Maldives.

An employee of the US Department of State, which represents the US in foreign policy issues, stated that “the US government is prepared to assist Maldives in any way”.

While recovering the staggering MVR 1.2 billion embezzled via MMPRC is one of Solih’s electoral pledges, his spokesperson Mariya Ahmed Didi has yet to deny or confirm these reports.

Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ahmed Naseem, also stated that Solih’s transition teams have discovered that reports indicate that debt levels to China are higher than previously estimated. Emphasising the intention to clarify information, Naseem stated that it was necessary to discuss the issue with the Chinese government with which the Maldivian government maintained strong diplomatic ties with during the past five years.
