The Parliamentary Committee on National Security on Thursday threw out the case on the murder of Ahmed Anas, who was killed by a gang late last month.
The case was submitted by lawmakers of main opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) and Jumhoory Party (JP), who also filed the case at the Parliamentary Committee on Security Services and the Parliamentary Committee on Oversight of the Government.
The government controlled National Security Committee quashed the case, noting that Maldives Police Service are already investigating the murder and that the committee's involvement may obstruct the police investigation.
Ruling Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM)'s Feydhoo MP Ibrahim Didi of the committee proposed to throw out the case, which was seconded by the parliament's deputy speaker and PPM's Hulhuhenveiru MP Moosa Manik. Committee members voted unanimously to drop the case.
Ahmed Anas, 25, a speedboat captain hailing from Raa atoll Meedhoo island was found with 37 stab wounds in capital Male’ late last month. He was the second person to be killed in less than a week amidst an upsurge of gang violence in the capital.
Police have arrested around a dozen suspects over Anas' murder, including minors. The Criminal Court has issued remands of 8-10 days for the suspects, but it remains unclear how many people are remanded.
