Deputy leader of Jumhoory Party (JP) and lawmaker of Kinbidhoo constituency Abdulla Riyaz called on Maldives Police Service, Maldives National Defence Force (MNDF), judiciary and other independent institutions to respect the change of parliament majority from the ruling party to the joint opposition on Monday.

Speaking at a press conference held at JP's main activity hub after submitting the petition calling for a motion of no confidence against Parliament Speaker Abdulla Maseeh, MP Riyaz called on the government to stop its harassment against the opposition.

Among the 45 lawmakers who signed the petition to seek the no confidence motion, 10 are from ruling Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM). The number indicates that the majority of parliament members are now in favour of passing the motion against the speaker, whereas earlier the government-ruled parliament had twice failed the motion.

Highlighting that this is a great achievement for the opposition, Riyaz expressed his confidence that this change in the Maldives' political landscape will push independent institutions and judicial courts to reconsider the situation.

Stressing that several politicians are being prosecuted and threatened by the government, he declared that even politicians who reside abroad should be able to work freely in the country. He vowed that such an environment will be ensured and provided within the parliament.

The lawmaker also stated that, in the face of the 45 signatures collected against Speaker Maseeh, it will be best for Maseeh to voluntarily step down now.
