Calls for MP Easa's arrest after attacks on MP Shaheem in parliament

The decision of the opposition MDP and The Democrats' parliamentary group not to approve some members of President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu's cabinet has caused a major uproar in the parliament resulting in various injuries sustained by parliament members.

Protesters have called for the arrest of Kendhikulhudhoo MP Ahmed Easa over the attacks on MP Shaheem during today's parliament unrest

Pro-government protesters have gathered outside the parliament and are demanding MP Easa's arrest, and there are calls for prompt action against the parliamentarian on social media as well.

Tension escalated, and a scuffle broke out inside the parliament chambers today after the opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) and The Democrats decided not to approve some members of President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu's cabinet.

The biggest altercation occurred between Kendhikulhudhoo MP Ahmed Easa and MP Shaheem. During the clash, MP Shaheem can be seen tripping MP Ahmed Easa. MP Shaheem also sustained serious injuries on his head when the two parliamentarians fell near the chamber during the scuffle. Minority leader Moosa Siraj attempted to stop the row.

However, a scuffle broke out between MP Easa and Shaheem later as well. MP Shaheem was injured when MP Easa kneed him and pulled his hair. While MP Shaheem sustained serious injuries near his ear, some members tried to quell the scuffle.

MP Shaheem has been taken to the hospital by ambulance.

Meanwhile, Mathiveri MP Hassan Zareer also sustained serious injuries to his finger. According to a parliamentarian, MP Zareer was injured during the scuffle between the members. Maradhoo MP Ibrahim Shareef alleged that MP Zareer was attacked by members of MDP.
