Addu City's Maradhoo Member of Parliament, Ibrahim Shareef, on Tuesday submitted a case to the parliament's secretariat upon receiving multiple death threats.

Shareef stated that he was receiving death threats repeatedly from a particular phone number, which he publicly revealed on Twitter.

However, he did not disclose the reason behind the threats.

Media Director of Parliament Hassan Ziyau stated that the Secretary General has now forwarded the case to Ministry of Defence.

Ministry of Defence is tasked with the protection of parliament members. After assessing the amount of risk, Maldives National Defence Force (MNDF) provided security to five MPs last year.

MNDF also provided security to several lawmakers of the 18th Parliament over death threats as well. The Presidential Commission on Murders and Enforced Disappearances stated that some of the perpetrators behind the death threats have been identified.
