President's Office Legal Secretary Abbas Shareef has applied for the post of Prosecutor General.
Abbas submitted his application to the post to the President's Office earlier today.
Abbas told Mihaaru News that he was interested in filling the position and hence had submitted his application. He said that he is so far unaware of the President's views regarding his application.
President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has to submit nominations for the post of Prosecutor General to the parliament.
The deadline for applying the post was today, but the number of applicants has not been revealed as of yet.
Abbas is a lawyer with extensive experience in the field, and had studied in the legal field at the University of Tasmania. He has served as legal representation for former Presidents Maumoon Abdul Gayoom and Abdulla Yameen.
Abbas also served as a High Court Judge from 2011 to 2015.
