MET has advised the public to exercise caution during adverse weather, particularly those traveling by sea.
Maldives Meteorological Services (MET) said that wind speeds will remain strong until Monday, next week.
MET, in a press release said that with the southwest monsoon intensifying, two circulations have formed in the north and south of Maldives. Over the past four days, strong average winds were experienced over the north and central atolls of Maldives.
Strongest gust winds recorded were 55 miles per hour yesterday at 23:10 hrs at Baa atoll Dharavandhoo, and 58 miles per hour at 05:40 hrs and 61 miles per hour at 10:46 hrs at Hulhumale' this morning.
Heaviest rainfall of 12 mm was recorded in Gnaviyani atoll Fuvahmulah on October 8.
"Adverse weather is expected to continue till Monday. Strong average winds of 15-25 miles per hour with widespread rain and occasional squally thundershower are expected in the northern and central atolls," the statement read.
MET said that average winds of 10-20 miles per hour with isolated squally thundershowers are expected in southern Maldives, while gust winds up to 45-55 miles per hour is expected in all areas.
Potential wave surges are also expected during high tide on surge prone areas.
MET has advised the public to exercise caution during adverse weather, particularly those traveling by sea.
The southwest monsoon is expected to end in December, giving way to the northeast monsoon.
