Criminal Court on Tuesday, November 7, has sentenced the motorbike rider, involved in the accident of Maldives National University (MNU) senior lecturer Ali Hafeez, to two years in jail.

Hafeez was hit by a speeding motorbike when he was stepping out of a mosque after completing dawn prayers. The accident took place earlier in June 2023, and authorities discovered the rider did not possess a valid driver's license as well.

Due to serious injuries from the accident, Hafeez had to be flown abroad for medical treatment.

State prosecution pressed the charge of grievous bodily harm on Shamman Abdul Shukoor, a local of Raa atoll Inguraidhoo for his suspected involvement in the accident, which he was convicted for in court.

The court however, found that Shamman's intention to hit Hafeez, or cause the accident was not deliberate.

Criminal Court in its verdict found Shamman guilty of the offense by confession, and noted that though his sentence is for two years, he will be serving time minus the period he spent in remand. As such, Shamman will be serving jail time for one year, 10 months and 29 days.

Shamman was granted conditional bail after his initial arrest.
