ELections Commission on Thursday issued funding for all political parties except for ruling Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM).

EC stated that the money was withheld due to the legal case regarding the party’s leadership filed at the Supreme Court.

EC revealed that the remaining sum of the MVR 24.2 million allocated from the state budget to registered political parties was deposited on Thursday. The first half of the political parties' budget, which was split into two parts, was deposited earlier in May.

The majority of the second part of the budget was allocated for PPM with MVR 8 million, as the ruling party has the largest membership. Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) is allocated the second largest sum at MVR 5.6 million. Pro-government Maldives Development Alliance (MDA) and opposition coalition partner Jumhooree Party (JP) both received MVR 1.9 million.

All political parties with a registered member base larger than 10,000 is entitled to receive state funding. PPM has the largest member base with 45,865 members, while MDP comes in second with 29,756 members.
