Ali Waheed, the former chairperson of Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) who recently joined Jumhoory Party, has been appointed as a political adviser to the latter's leader, Qasim Ibrahim.

Waheed had announced his resignation from MDP and new allegiance to JP at a meeting held with Qasim Ibrahim in Germany, where the former resides under political asylum. He now joins the ranks of former Vice President Dr. Mohamed Jameel Ahmed as one of Qasim's advisers.

Qasim welcomed Waheed in a tweet posted in the early hours of Sunday, describing the new addition to his party as a great source of happiness and encouragement. He expressed confidence that Waheed would bring further strength and spirit to JP as his new adviser.

After signing into JP, Waheed had declared late on Saturday that Jumhoory Party was the one capable of mending the ripped fabric of Maldivian society. Lauding Qasim Ibrahim as the one that had worked hardest and sacrificed most to ensure that the people received all the freedoms accorded under the current Constitution, he said that Qasim was deserving of the "highest crown".

Ali Waheed had first entered the field of politics as a supporter of former President Maumoon Abdul Gayoom. He was the lawmaker of Thoddoo constituency when he shifted his allegiance to MDP, where he was elected as the party's chairperson.

He had later left MDP over irreconcilable differences with the party's leadership. At the time, he was in self-exile in the United Kingdom where he now resides, after the state levied terrorism charges against Waheed in connection to the major opposition rally held on May 1, 2015.
