The leader of Dhivehi Rayyithunge Party (DRP), Abdulla Jabir, on Tuesday filed a lawsuit at the Civil Court against the leader of Jumhooree Party, Qasim Ibrahim, over failure to repay a loan of MVR 6 million.

According to the lawsuit, Qasim, who is the parliamentary representative for Alif Dhaalu Atoll's Maamigili constituency, failed to repay USD 65,000 from a loan of USD 1 million he borrowed from Jabir, who represents Kaafu Atoll's Kaashidhoo constituency in the parliament.

Furthermore, the case read that Qasim borrowed an additional MVR 5 million through President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih, racking up the total pending amount to approximately six million in Maldivian Rufiyaa.

Jabir stated in the lawsuit that he has not received any repayments pertaining to the MVR 5 million.

The MP requested the Civil Court to look into the case at the earliest, and order the defendant to settle the pending loans in a single lump sum.

Previously, MP Jabir had filed a case against former President Maumoon Abdul Gayoom as well, over alleged failure to repay a sum of MVR 29 million loaned as campaign funds for the previous presidential elections.

However, Gayoom's political party, Maldives Reform Movement (MRM), refuted Jabir's claims and maintained that he had not loaned any money to either Gayoom or any individual of the party.
