Elections Commission (EC) on Tuesday decided to count the spoilt votes of three ballot boxes in Maamigili constituency, which was won by Speaker of Parliament Qasim Ibrahim in the April 6 Parliamentary Elections.
According to local media, the electoral watchdog made the decision following complaints submitted by a campaign agent of Qasim.
The leader of Jumhooree Party (JP) defended his home constituency, which is comprised of Maamigili and Fenfushi in Alif Dhaalu Atoll, with a narrow margin of 94 ballots, in contrast to his landslide wins with 80 percent votes in previous elections.
His rival in this year's election was Ali Ameez from Maldivian Democratic Party, the leading member of the governing coalition.
JP put forward candidates for over 40 constituencies in the April 6 elections, but won only five seats. The parliament super majority was secured by MDP which attained 65 constituencies.
The EC is also recounting the votes of Maavah constituency, which was won by former Minister of Economic Development Mohamed Saeed. Moreover, the electoral watchdog is probing a polling issue of Kendhoo constituency, which was defended by Ali Hussain of JP.
