A motion has been submitted to the parliament calling for the expedited distribution of the approved housing flats under the “Gedhoruveriya” scheme introduced during former President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih's government.

The motion submitted by Galolhu North MP Eva Abdulla stated that the delay in distributing the flats due to various reasons will cause multiple losses, highlighting that these recipients included persons currently having to live in small spaces, as well as people who are forced to spend a large portion of their income on rent.

Eva said that it is crucial to hand over flats at the earliest to those deemed eligible, so as to provide swift ease to persons living in such difficult conditions.

“The Anti Corruption Commission has concluded the investigation prompted by multiple complaints submitted regarding the allocation of flats. In this instance, it is crucial to expedite the distribution of flats to the recipients who meet the eligibility criteria in order to provide them urgent relief from the harsh conditions they currently have to live in,” the motion stated.

Eva also urged a swift completion to the follow up to the ACC investigation surrounding contested allocations, and to ensure the flats can be issued as soon as possible.

While deliberating the issue, Eva said that residents of Male' live in very poor conditions and they are unable to build a life due to housing struggles. She called the state to expedite the distribution of these flats and stressed that the people must not be kept in a state of uncertainty.

Eva acknowledged the distribution of flats to people who had never resided in Male City by the previous government. However, she maintained that while this is so, the delay in the distribution of flats to the rightful recipients cannot be accepted.

ACC investigation had concluded that 60 percent of the recipients allocated the 4000 flats did not meet the eligibility criteria.

The investigation found eligible applicants devoid of any issues to be at 20.7 percent of the recipients.

Errors found in the application forms

- The inclusion of many ineligible applicants within the 4000 recipients

- Misinformation provided in applications

- Points given contrary to the policy in the section for people with special needs

- Additional documents submitted during complaint period

- Points granted against the point awarding policy

- It was noticed that many people’s rights were infringed upon

Housing Minister Ali Haidar shared with Mihaaru News yesterday that further deliberations will be held with the Attorney General and additional concerned institutes of the state, together with the commission itself. He stated that a final decision will be reached following this deliberation.

He revealed that there is currently no decision to cancel the flat recipients list compiled by the former administration.

The permanent list for the flat recipients were revealed two days before the former government reached the end of office. ACC had ordered the distribution of flats to be halted at the time due to multiple complaints of discriminatory allocations submitted to the commission on the same day.
