Former president Maumoon Abdul Gayoom's lawyer Hussain Shameem reported that Maumoon's medications have been restrained by the police.

Maumoon is currently serving his jail sentence of one year, seven months and six days in jail under obstruction of justice charges.

According to Shameem, the absence of the medication was only discovered upon Maumoon's daily medication time, after he was transferred to Dhoonidhoo custodial centre from Maafushi Prison. The police had restrained the medication unbeknownst to Maumoon.

"This was something we worried about. Any medication to be taken by Maumoon should be in his care. Even the police would not have the right to do otherwise", said Shameem.

Furthermore, Shameem stated that Police removed Maumoon's medication only after he was transferred from Maafushi to Dhoonidhoo.

The 80-year-old former president is currently undergoing treatment for benign paroxysmal positional vertigo, a disorder that may lead to periods of vertigo and spinning sensation upon changes in the position of the head.

The doctor appointed to consult Maumoon has advised him to be transferred to his home in capital Male. However, Maldives Correctional Service (MCS) denied this and subsequently mandated his transfer to Dhoonidhoo.

MCS declared 'special needs' circumstances as the reason for Maumoon's transfer from Maafushi jail to detainment under Maldives Police Service in Dhoonidhoo.

Shameem took to Twitter to express his rendition of the process of Maumoon's transfer, claiming that Maumoon was essentially 'stolen' by MCS. His reason for the accusation was that the transfer had taken place without any such information extended to any of Maumoon's family members or his lawyers.

He further criticized Maldives Police Service on Twitter by posing deliberate questions about the restraining of Maumoon's medication.

Another lawyer of the president, Maumoon Hameed, later on Twitter also revealed that the police cancelled the legal team's meeting with Maumoon the same day.

The Criminal Court convicted Maumoon of obstructing justice after finding him guilty of deliberately refusing to comply with the police's order to hand over his mobile phone for investigation, after their warrants released on February 1.

On February 5, Maumoon was arrested under allegations of planning an unlawful overthrowing of incumbent President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom's government. The terrorism charges pressed against Maumoon are currently being looked into by the Criminal Court. If convicted, Maumoon will face jail time of 17 to 20 years.
