The Football Association of Maldives (FAM) has commenced the process of collecting signatures from its member clubs to submit a no-confidence motion against its President, Bassam Adeel Jaleel.
Former President and Mahibadhoo MP Ahmed Thoriq (Tom) has spearheaded this initiative, stating on social media, "We have started collecting signatures of clubs to move a no-confidence motion against FAM president Bassam.
"If there's respect for football, then the right thing to do is to resign," he said.
According to FAM's general regulations, the no-confidence motion requires the support of two-thirds of the association's member clubs to hold a congress to vote on the no-confidence motion.
Thoriq, also the Vice President of Club Eagles, has announced his candidacy for the FAM presidency in next year's elections. Bassam's term concludes on July 2, 2024, with elections scheduled to take place before that.
This marks the second attempt to move a no-confidence motion against Bassam, the first having occurred during his first term in 2018. In December 2018, when New Radiant Sports Club attempted to submit a no-confidence motion against Bassam, the club was suspended by the FAM for non-payment of players' salaries. After New Radiant was suspended, Victory Sports Club became involved in the issue.
Former Sports Minister Ahmed Mahloof led the effort, backed by clubs like Maziya, Green Streets, TC, and United Victory, although later some of the signatories withdrew their support.
