The no confidence motion submitted against Parliament Speaker Mohamed Aslam and Deputy Speaker Ahmed Saleem has been withdrawn.

The no confidence motions against the Speaker and Deputy Speaker were submitted by ruling People's National Congress (PNC) on January 28.

Parliament Secretariat has earlier sent notice to both Aslam and Saleem regarding the motion. The Parliament's General Purpose Committee had planned to decide today on timings to deliberate on the motion.

However, most PNC members who had earlier signed in favour of the motions have withdrawn their support, and the motions themselves have been duly withdrawn.

PNC Parliamentary Group (PG) Leader Moosa Siraj explained to Mihaaru that the party had made the decision to withdraw the motions as they felt it is not imperative to proceed with the motions at the time being.

Although a high number of parliamentarians had signed the motions to remove Aslam and Saleem from the positions, the majority of the parliament still aligns with them in light of their party affiliations.

Despite a number of members of their opposition parties having crossed the floor to join the ruling party, PNC remains the parliament's minority party with 24 members.
