Maldives Police Service has informed Supreme Court Justice Dr. Azmiralda Zahir that the complaint she filed with the agency requesting an investigation into the President of the Anti Corruption Commission (ACC), Adam Shamil, for allegedly giving false testimonies against her will not be pursued.
Dr. Azmiralda filed the case last Sunday, claiming that Shamil had sent a letter to the Judicial Service Commission (JSC) saying there was an active investigation against her, when there was not such probe. She said this classified as a false testimony.
Azmiralda also requested a criminal investigation into the attempted influence on her.
However, her lawyers revealed that police had informed them that the two cases could not be pursued as criminal cases, claiming there was no reason to believe a crime was committed.
Azmiralda, along with two other Supreme Court Justices, was suspended on February 26 claiming there was an ongoing ACC investigation against them. The move came just minutes before the Court was set to convene a hearing in a case challenging the anti defection amendment brought to the constitution by a majority vote of the ruling party lawmakers.
However, the commission has not yet revealed what allegations are being investigated against the justices. Even when requested under the Right to Information Act, ACC refused to provide any information.
Because of this, Justice Azmiralda filed a complaint with the ACC last month, accusing Shamil of abusing his position to provide false information. The commission has accepted the case.
