Minister of Defence and National Treasury Adam Shareef will contest for the constituency of Maduvvari in the parliamentary elections, slated for March 2019.
The minister made the announcement during a press conference held at the Coast Guard Building on Thursday.
Declaring that he would remain in service to the Maldivian post his ministerial tenure, he stated that he would run for parliament on the electoral ticket of ruling Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM) in order to hold the administration of President-Elect Ibrahim Mohamed Solih accountable.
PPM and supporters of outgoing President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom will become the main opposition after Solih's inauguration on November 17.
Adam Shareef, who hails from Fainu in Raa Atoll, had spent the majority of his life in Meedhoo, which is part of the Maduvvari constituency.
Meanwhile, Minister of Housing and Infrastructure Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has also announced his decision to run for parliament next year. However, the housing minister is yet to announce a constituency.
