A petition has been submitted to the People's Majlis seeking a 3 month delay in collecting rent from Hiyaa flats in Hulhumale' Phase two.

Housing Development Corporation (HDC) has decided to collect rent from Hiyaa flats that have been deferred for seven months.

Maduvvari MP Adam Shareef has stated that a large number of people are working on the finishing of Hiyaa flats by taking loans and goods on debt after the government failed to complete the finishing of the flats.

He also said that while majority of the people have yet to overcome the Covid-19 pandemic, many people are facing financial difficulties due to the start of the holy month of Ramadan.

HDC's decision to impose a fine on residents of Hiyaa flats if they fail to pay the rent has caused further difficulties.

"The case was submitted under Article 179 of the Parliament Regulations, calling on the government to postpone the rent collection of Hiyaa flats for another three months," said the PG Leader of PNC.

The government had initially decided to start collecting rent from September after giving a period of four months for the finishing of hiyaa flats. However, due to concerns expressed by the public over moving into the flats and incomplete finishing, the government has decided not to charge rent until last month.

However, HDC said rent will be charged from 1st of this month.

Hiyaa flats, which currently have more than 3,000 families, will be charged a monthly rent of MVR 7,500. However, a total of MVR 8,500 is required to be paid with the service fee.

Residents of Hiyaa flats have called for a reduction in rent set by the government. A petition was also submitted to HDC by 1,500 people. However, the company has previously stated that the government and HDC had decided that the lease cannot be changed and that they has no intention of changing the decision.
