Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) has dismissed MP Abdulla Jabir from the party, citing disciplinary issues.

With the dismissal, Jabir loses the party's parliamentary ticket for the Kaashidhoo constituency that he recently won in the primaries.

In a press release issued tonight, MDP said that they were removing Jabir from party membership owing to repeated acts on his part against social standards, the use of disrespectful and abusive language, and actions disrupting the peace.

Jabir is noted to have used offensive language in verbal altercations with the public on his recent campaign trips. This is not the first time that such behaviour from him has come to the notice of the public.

MDP stated that this behaviour from a member and candidate impinges on the rights of their general members. After reviewing the case, the party's relevant committee came to the decision to not allow Jabir to run for office on a party ticket, and to dismiss him from general membership in the party as well, the statement reads.

In the instance that Jabir reapplies for membership at the party, the matter has to be submitted to the party's National Council, which will make a final decision on the matter.

MDP further stated that even if Jabir is allowed back into party membership, he would not be permitted to serve in any leadership positions or run for office within the party or election primaries for a period of five years from the day of joining.

While MDP announced last night that it would be boycotting President Dr Mohamed Muizzu's Presidential Address in parliament today, Jabir was seen attending the event.
