Kaashidhoo MP Abdulla Jabir has repaid USD 1 million (MVR 15 million) to former Malé City Mayor 'Sarangu' Adam Manik following a lawsuit filed by the claimant seeking the money owed to him.
Adam Manik filed a lawsuit against Jabir at the Civil Court due to persistent delays in repaying a debt, an amount previously loaned by the former Mayor. In addition to Jabir, a company in which he holds a stake was also implicated in the same case, as it acted as a guarantor on behalf of the MP.
The Civil Court held that the claimant had been informed of the receipt of the owed amount, prompting a request from the claimant to withdraw the case.
The Constitution stipulates that Members of Parliament (MPs) risk losing their seat if a court of law proves a debt against them and they fail to fulfill the legal obligation of repayment.
