Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) is seeking action against Thoddoo MP Hassan Shiyan and Kaashidhoo MP Abdulla Jabir for opposing the party's three-line whip issued regarding the appointment of the new Deputy Speaker at Sunday evening's sitting.

According to the MDP parliamentary group's spokesperson and Velidhoo MP Mohamed Abdulla Shafeeq, the party's PG leader and Alifushi MP Mohamed Rasheed has announced decision to seek action against the MPs for opposing the party's whip.

Parliament members appointed Ahmed Saleem, the Hoarafushi MP from MDP, who was approved to contend through a discreet vote of the MDP parliamentary group. In this vote, Jabir had only secured 23 votes.

After the party issued the whip to vote for Saleem, Jabir submitted his name for the position against MDP's decision. However, Jabir had spoken in favor of the party's decision earlier.

Following the vote results at the sitting, Jabir contested against it during Monday's parliament sitting, voicing his frustration.

Immediately after entering the chambers, Jabir began to raise his voice and disrupt the proceedings. He was observed directing his anger at the Parliament Speaker, Mohamed Aslam.

Besides this, the MP had directed his anger at Deputy Speaker Saleem as well.

After the parliament's chair advised Jabir twice, the MP sat on the chamber's floor in protest. After advising the MP for a third time, Aslam called out his name and demanded he leave the chambers immediately.

An MP present at the sitting, while speaking with Mihaaru News, said Jabir had broken the microphone on his desk. The MP further said that Jabir's frustration was directed at the vote results of Sunday evening's sitting to appoint the Deputy Speaker.

Besides Saleem and Jabir, Addu Meedhoo MP Rozaina Adam had contended for the Deputy Speaker's position.

Saleem secured 51 votes at Sunday evening's sitting.
