The People's Majlis has accepted an emergency motion on Wednesday calling for an end to the mass rally scheduled by opposition coalition to be held in Male' City on Friday.

The Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM) and People's National Congress (PNC) Coalition plan to have a rally on late afternoon on Friday.

This will be the first rally former President Abdulla Yameen will be participating in Male' since he was freed from his jail sentence.

Parliament member for Kaashidhoo constituency Abdulla Jabir submitted a special motion today stating the "India Out" rallies and events organised by opposition is a matter of national security. He also accused that it is organised to create distrust and hate for one of Maldives' neighbouring nations.

The motion called to halt the event that is to be attended by a large number of people coming to Male' for the rally itself. It said defence forces must be utilised and events such as this should not be held in the name of freedom of assembly.

Thirty members had voted to accept the emergency motion while two members voted against it.

Home Minister Imran Abdulla also said the ministry would halt the mass rally to be held on Friday.

PPM said they will continue the protests against Indian military personnel in Maldives even if the police obstruct them. More than 4,000 people will arrive from the atolls to take part in the protest, according to the party.

Even though the rally on Friday will be the first one Yameen will be attending in Male', he has participated in multiple rallies held in other parts of the country since his release on November 30, 2021.
