Opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) Chairperson Fayyaz Ismail said that the voter turnout for the local council by-elections held on Saturday was so low that there is no reason to be upset about the results.

Ruling party, People's National Congress (PNC), secured all but the Rasmaadhoo seat from the six council seats up for election.

Although MDP also contested for these seats, they did not manage to win any due to limited campaign efforts. The seat for the female councilor for Raa atoll Rasmaadhoo Council was won by an independent candidate.

Despite the opposition leadership facing significant criticism, Fayyaz Ismail commended the courage and efforts of MDP candidates in the by-elections in a post on social media platform X.

“There is no reason to be disheartened with the results of an election where only a small percentage of people went to cast their votes,” Fayyaz said.

He said that the efforts made to strengthen the party's management will lead to fruitful outcomes in the future.

A total of nine local council seats were up for by-elections on Saturday; however, the remaining three seats were uncontested due to a lack of opposing candidates. The ruling party, PNC, claimed these three seats without a poll.

Although PNC claimed most of the seats in the by-elections, the voter turnout was notably low.

Out of the 13,112 eligible voters for the six constituencies, only 3,528 turned up at the voting stations, marking a turnout of 27 percent.
