President departs for the SIDS4 conference

President Muizzu and his delegation of Senior Officials of the State has left for Antigua and Barbuda Friday night to attend the fourth International Conference on Small Island Developing States (SIDS4).

President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has departed to attend the fourth International Conference on Small Island Developing States (SIDS4) last night.

This conference that is organized once a decade is set to be held in Antigua and Barbuda from May 27 to May 30 this year under a theme of "Chartering the Course towards Resilient Prosperity".

In addition to renewing partnerships within small island nations, the conference this year aims to arrange solutions that will lead to a path of prosperity and assess the ability of SIDS to attain sustainable developmental progress.

Small Island Developing States (SIDS) are some of the most disaster-prone countries in the world due to their unique characteristic. They have high exposure to natural hazards such as sea-level rise, floods and tsunamis and has a disaster mortality rate double the global average. They are comprised of 39 UN Member States and 18 Associate Members of UN's regional commissions.

President Muizzu will also deliver a national statement during the plenary session of this summit hosted in Barbuda on May 27.

The President's Office stated on Thursday that three events organized by Maldives is set to take place during the conference.

The first event will share the country's progress during its journey towards digitalization and the role of digitalization in the country's developmental agenda. While the second event is encircled within the development brought to Hulhumale', the third event will address the regional development across the country.

This conference, attended by multiple leaders of SIDS will be held at the American University of Antigua in St. John's, the capital city of Antigua and Barbuda.

A delegation consisting of Senior Officials of the state is accompanying President Muizzu on this trip. This delegation includes the Minister of Climate Change, Environment and Energy Thoriq Ibrahim, Minister of Foreign Affairs Moosa Zameer, Managing Director of Housing Development Corporation (HDC) Ibrahim Fazul Rasheed and Minister of Housing, Land and Urban Development Dr Ali Haidar among others.
