Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM) parliamentary group's deputy leader Ibrahim Falah on Wednesday announced the intention to file a motion of no confidence against Moosa Manik, the Deputy Speaker of Parliament.
The Inguraidhoo MP made the comment during a parliamentary debate regarding the bill submitted in order to nullify the Anti-Defection Act.
Falah criticized Moosa Manik for not properly informing lawmakers of the timings of parliament sessions which he described as being held at random. As proof, Falah stated that parliamentarians were notified of Wednesday’s meeting, which had in fact been cancelled the previous day, at 10:45 a.m. only 15 minutes prior to the beginning of the session.
Moosa, who was chairing the parliamentary session, refuted these claims, stating that Abdullah Maseeh, the Speaker of Parliament, was responsible for setting timings and that he was only tasked with relaying the information. Moosa also stated that he acted in accordance with the constitution and not the wishes of any particular political party.
A motion of no confidence, backed by 51 signatures, has already been submitted against Parliament Speaker Abdulla Maseeh earlier this month. The final decision regarding Maseeh depend on the votes cast by the Parliament on November 8
As per the constitution, a motion of no-confidence against the Speaker or Deputy Speaker of parliament must be backed by a minimum of 43 signatures. The decision of the parliament regarding such a matter will come into effect immediately.
