President Dr Mohamed Muizzu reaffirmed yesterday that his commitment to provide flats and land to those who submitted valid applications remains unchanged.

During a meeting held at the President's Office with leaders of various housing unions, Dr Muizzu discussed public concerns, with Housing Minister Dr Ali Haider Ahmed and other senior ministry officials in attendance.

Following the meeting, union members told the media that President Muizzu assured them his promise would be upheld. The President’s Office said that applicants whose name has been published in the Maldives Gazette will receive flats and land if their applications comply with regulations, in line with Dr Muizzu's presidential pledge.

The President also provided an update on ongoing and planned housing projects, addressing challenges encountered during the process. "He assured union members that he would work with the relevant authorities to resolve the issues as soon as possible," the President’s Office stated.

Under the Binveriyaa scheme implemented by former President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih’s government, more than 9,000 plots of land were allocated to Male' citizens. These plots are from reclaimed areas in Hulhumale', Gulhifalhu, and Giraavarufalhu, with land already handed over to those who received plots from Hulhumale'.

The previous administration also announced the first 4,000 recipients of flats under the Gedhoruveriyaa scheme shortly before leaving office. However, the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) halted the allocation following a complaint alleging potential unlawful conduct in awarding these units.

The ACC found that 60 percent of the 4,000 individuals on the list were ineligible, with only 20.7 percent of eligible applications having no issues. The remaining 20 percent of eligible forms contained discrepancies. The current administration has decided to review all applications submitted in the first round of the Gedhoruveriyaa scheme and compile a new list, totaling more than 20,000 forms.

Housing Minister Dr Haidar stated in July that the final list would be released next month after review.
