Man that has been reported as missing in Maldives has been taken abroad as a "guarantor" by the drug network he was working for, Police said on Wednesday.

Misbah Mohamed, 25, was announced as missing by Police in May, upon his family's request. They reported him as missing in April, after he moved to Male' several months prior. He used to live in Haa Dhaalu Nolhivaramfaru.

Mihaaru news previously reported, citing credible sources, that Misbaah was taken abroad as a guarantor for drugs seized by the Police . Since then Police have confirmed that, and said he was taken abroad by one of the high ranking personnel, Irufan Thagiyyu, that works for a foreign network to smuggle drugs to Maldives. This network was caught importing nearly 72 kilos of drugs last December.

Misbah was taken abroad via Fly Dubai on November 11, 2020. Previously Police had stated he went abroad on the 20th of November. They have since amended the statement, citing data error.

After taking Misabah abroad, Irufan came back to Maldives via Emirates on November 22. Instead of returning to Maldives with Irufan, Misbah had boarded another flight and gone to Pakistan from Dubai, on a Fly Dubai flight, Police said.

Police said they believe Misbaah was taken abroad to act as a guarantor until the expenses of the drugs Irufan was handling is completed.

However, Irufan has been arrested in December in connection to the 72 kilo of drugs smuggled to Maldives. Police has since finished the investigation and sent Irufan's case for prosecution on February 3, 2021. Ten more people were prosecuted in addition to Irufan for this case.
