Minister of Economic Development Mohamed Saeed said today the problem Maldives is faced with is that of leaders who have held top office who cannot digest or accept watching others do the same in successive governments.

A member of the Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM)/ People's National Congress (PNC) leadership, Minister Saeed made the remarks in response to comments made by former President Abdulla Yameen yesterday.

Former President Yameen, who split from the ruling faction following internal disagreements within PPM to form a new political party with People's National Front, said at a meeting with his supporters that the dollar rate had decreased not because of any government efforts, but as a natural change resulting from low demand fueled by stalled development projects. Yameen stated that the government had done no work to achieve this.

In response to former president Yameen's claims, Minister Saeed posted on X saying that the price of the dollar would continue to go down because of robust measures being undertaken by President Dr Muizzu's government.

"Many stalled projects are moving forward at a pace that has not been seen in any government before," he said.

This is the truth. The biggest problem faced in Maldives is that of leaders who have held top office who cannot digest watching others do the same in successive governments.

Minister Saeed went on to say that when President Dr Muizzu took over the government, it was the most critical period that any new government has had to assume office in.

"This is the truth," Minister Saeed stated. "The biggest problem faced in Maldives is that of leaders who have held top office who cannot digest watching others do the same in successive governments."

Former President Yameen is serving an 11-year prison sentence for money laundering and has been openly critical of the new government and its policies.

As per President Dr Muizzu's request upon his election, the Solih administration has allowed Yameen to continue serving his sentence while remaining in house arrest.
