Maldives has begun deliberations with Turkey to establish a free trade agreement between the two countries.

Minister Saeed remarked that numerous efforts are expended into strengthening business relations between the two countries since President Dr Mohamed Muizzu’s official trip to Turkey.

While the details of the good to be included in this agreement have not been disclosed, President Muizzu has states that the two countries have signed an agreement to import staple food into Maldives.

The President has been maintaining close ties with Turkey ever since he assumed office, further evidenced by his first official state visit to Turkey since he assumed the presidency.

While three drones have also been subsequently purchased from Turkey to increase the capacity of the Maldives National Defence Force (MNDF) to monitor the Maldivian maritime area independently, the President assured that Turkey had gifted most of the devices on these drones free of charge.

Furthermore, it has been decided to establish a Maldivian embassy in Turkey, with administrative work currently underway to facilitate the necessary procedures.
